addendum to my last post:
apparently vlc works just fine.  (i had tried ogle, then vlc, which didn't
work because ogle hadn't died and couldn't be killed).  so using the
promise ide card and vlc seems to tentatively solve this problem.  (i say
'tentatively' because the video is really choppy, but this may just be
my crappy cheap-ass video card)
