yes they are not equivalent..

ad0 is the entire physical drive
ad0c is the same as ad0s1 (or whatever slice is your first BSD slice).
Do NOT use ad0c. it is magicly the same as ad0s1 but the magic is scheduled to
dissappear 
some time in the next 10 years.
