ttyv3   "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon"  xterm   on

"Should" is a little strong.  There is nothing really wrong with
starting it from rc.local, but putting it in ttys ensures that
tty is reserved for X.  Also, if xdm crashes for some reason, it
will automatically be restarted.
