I gave up, until I have a Ubuntu system running. And have another go.
Currently it runs on one of my Windows servers using the Axis software.

He's been contacted by FreeBSD-people more often.
But the ac* configfiles are full of the Linux-isms in ways that did not 
work for me. Tried the porting on 6.x/i386 quite a while ago.
