hi, a lot of it has to do with what the manufacturer attaches to the chip. The chip itself may only be able to put out 18dBm at the lowest transmit rate and significantly less (12-14dBm) at the highest transmit rate. The manufacturer may then opt to add extra output amplifiers :) (Also, I'm doing the FreeBSD port to the AR9340 now, in my spare time.
