Preamble: ALPHA3 is not yet announced, and the schedule at 
<https://www.freebsd.org/releases/15.0R/>; does not yet show that builds 
have begun. I might describe things as fast-moving and pleasantly 
overlapping.

Thanks. The result of an actual (possibly premature) upgrade:

tl;dr the end result, following a restart, was 15.0-ALPHA3 for the 
running kernel and for userland.

was followed by a lock of the pkg package in response to issue 2522
then
pkg upgrade -Uy -r FreeBSD-base
