I strongly recommend resisting the urge to buy the latest and greatest laptop, and, instead, to buy two (or more!) identical laptops, slightly slower, slightly less resolution, but much cheaper, per unit, as well. This strategy of redundancy, along with some data replication mechanisms, can do a lot to buffer the pain that one feels when something like this happens. And it doesn't need to be stolen for this to happen; it could get a drink spilled on it, or be dropped. They are fragile things. One does not need a GHz CPU to run UNIX; just the opposite. And older machines are better supported, more stable. It's only an issue of you're doing development and need to compile kernel-sized programs in less than a few minutes, IMHO ... and at that point, you're better off logging into some Big Iron, anyway, so your work is backed up. My sympathies ... Regards, -- richard Dan Langille wrote: >It's just so sickening. It gets me right in the gut. > >My laptop was stolen from my car today over lunch.
