Possibly it's more efficient to keep the working ntp3 version in
current. Why upgrade to a newer version 3 and then updating to v4 ?

Too much movement in the base OS.

And DES. When I read the notes correctly DES _and_ MD5 are default
configure options. Maybe I'm wrong, but configure --help told me so.

I can include all your patches into my port and update the port,
if there is a new release.

The only thing that should be done, is to add variables 
to /etc/rc.conf for xntpd_prog and ntpdate_prog and to
alter rc.netstart and netstart to use that variables ...

This makes it easier to use the newer versions of ntpdate
and ntpd in /usr/local/bin.
