I would have prefered to let the actors of that thread explain it better, but well... let's hope my memory doesn't betray me: The discussion back then ocurred right after Yokota's syscons redesign. Jonathan Mini suggested modifying the console code so that, for example, <ALT-F1> provided a pcvt console and <ALT-F2> an sco-like console. Julian Elischer posted a nice OO design of a discussion that was dated back from the 386BSD days. The interesting document is not easy to find and I'm not sure if it's on -current or on -hackers.
