The > disks were IBM DTLA type, 15G. FWIW, the German magazine recently published a comparison of 331 disk drives (issue 16/00). The top performing IDE drive was the IBM DTLA 307030 (30 GB), with a weighted result of 20.7 MB/s. Only one SCSI drive exceeded this value. I don't see a 15 GB DTLA drive in the list, the smallest is 19 GB, but it only did 13.9 MB/s. Note that the benchmark is probably flawed: the tests found an average positioning time of 11.0 ms for the DTLA 307030, compared to as low as 7.2 ms for SCSI drives (IBM DDYS). If these times seem slow to you, c't measures positioning time differently from the manufacturers: they measure the average over the whole disk, while manufacturers measure the average over the first 504 MB (!).
