http://www.mozilla.org/performance/tools.html gives some profiling options. I haven't had much success with any of them under FreeBSD. When I used jprof on RedHat, I found most of the cpu time being used in one very dumb colorspace conversion loop inside gtk which was re-writing each image one byte at a time (not one pixel, but one byte of each pixel, byte by byte).
