I get the same error message when trying "ifconfig wi0 mediaopt hostap".
However "wi" defaults to port-type 6, after installing, which is hostap.

I can use wicontrol -p x (x=1,3,6) to switch modes though??
I have no other issues other than ifconfig not working.

First, the Intel 2011 is a Symbol card, not a prism2 card. I do know
that the version of the firmware that you have doesn't support the
hostap functionality. I have no idea if newer versions have it or
not.
