First, I want to thank everyone for the useful replies I received on this,
over 30 so far!

 Several people have suggested a UPS based solution.  This is to look like
an instrument, ie a small black box.  Not enough room for a UPS internally,
and nothing to prevent a user from unplugging it.  The ideas about
honker caps for ~60-100ms uptime might be workable.

The ideas along the lines of an MFS based working partition, with everything
else mounted readonly also has merit.  I'll be back after mulling this over
some more...
