Stop >*** Error code 2 OK; I got it to work: seems that there were some (extraneous?) .depend files in my source tree; in particular, one of them was claiming that the above-mentioned strfile depended on stdlib.h. Issuing find /usr/src -name .depend -print identified the 5 or 6 that were there; I removed each of them, re-started the buildworld, and it finished successfully by the time I got up this morning.
