The requirement is that we have at least 5 real users of the interface on FreeBSD 12. Many of the P III era PCs aren't beefy enough to run FreeBSD very well (specifically, they typically lack adequate memory). QEMU also emulates newer NICs, so you wouldn't be left w/o a solution. The NE-2000 is still supported, as well E1000 (em/igb) interfaces.
