The sa(4) driver is getting back toward usability it had a while back, but it's still got a long way to go. I'm not quite sure yet whether I've fixed your specific issue because I haven't done tape spanning yet. I have done some simple tests and it's now back to what it should have been. Fixed block tapes still have problems reading logical EOT, but that's been true for a while anyway.
