The following works quite good for me:
1. install libSDL from the ports
> cd /usr/ports/devel/sdl12 && make install
2. install the videolan client
> cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@anoncvs.videolan.org:/var/cvs/videolan \
login
# this will ask you for a password, just hit enter
> cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@anoncvs.videolan.org:/var/cvs/videolan \
-z3 checkout vlc
> cd vlc
# the following is in bourne shell syntax
> CFLAGS=-pthread && CXXFLAGS=-pthread && LDFLAGS=-pthread && \
export CFLAGS CXXFLAGS LDFLAGS && \
> sh configure --prefix=/usr/local --with-sdl=/usr/local
> gmake
> gmake install
3. run /usr/local/bin/vlc
