I am going to merge accent/dead key support from -current to -stable in the next few hours. syscons and kbdcontrol will be modified. Menus in kbdmap and sysinstall will be updated. The following keymaps with accent key definitions will be added to share/syscons/keymaps: fr.iso.acc.kbd icelandic.iso.acc.kbd spanish.iso.acc.kbd The following keymaps, which don't contain accent key definitions, will be merged from -current too: icelandic.iso.kbd lat-amer.kbd (Latin American) pl_PL.ISO_8859-2.kbd (Polish) si.iso.kbd (Slovenian) Modification is fully backward compatible. You can continue using existing keymaps as is. So long as you don't use new keymaps with accent keys, you don't see any difference. You do not need to remake world or rebuild kernel if you are not interested. (However, if you decide to do `make world', you must subsequently rebuild the kernel. The NEW kbdcontrol won't work with the OLD kernel. Reverse is OK: the NEW kernel will be fine with the OLD kbdcontrol.) If you do want to use this new feature, you must `make world' then rebuild the kernel. Then, load a new keymap, say French, by `kbdcontrol -l fr.iso.acc'. To obtain an accented character, press a dead key followed by a regular character key to which you want to add accent. Press a dead key twice, or press a dead key once then followed by the space bar in order to get the accent character itself. If you are interested in adding accent key support to your keymap, please contact me. Thank you. Kazu yokota@freebsd.org
