Run a few searches on the -chat, -stable, and -hackers lists. This
topic has come up quite frequently on there since the release of the 2.4
Linux kernel. There are quite a few sites, comparisons, and benchmark
tests listed in those threads.

The only one I can remember off-hand is the one done by Byte.com
comparing kernel 2.4-based distros with FreeBSD 4.2 or 4.3.

One things you'll note in these threads: FreeBSD is tuned for stability
out-of-the-box, whereas Linux distros are usually tuned for raw
performance. Thus, out-of-the-box tests generally favour Linux. After
proper tuning, though, FreeBSD (epsecially versions after 4.4) comes out
on top, and is still very stable.

That's one things I've always liked about the BSDs: they're more
concerned with stability, correctness, and security, and manage all that
without sacrificing too much performance. Me, personally, I'd rather
have a box up 24/7 running moderately fast than a box up for 12 hours at
a time but running super-fast. :)
