AC97 is a standard. Some AC97 codecs have features above and beyond what the standard specifies and may need initialization tweaks, but the vast conform to the standard closely and work as is. The Analog Devices ad1980 has some patches pending in the source tree. If you buy a board with one of these, then applying or even determining a patch might be in order, but it shouldn't be too much work. - Orion
