Is it not the time to remove NOT_FOR_ARCHS = alpha from the gcc42 Makefile? Is anybody having trouble with gcc42 on alpha? I've been installing every new version of it on my DS10L for about a year, and it always works fine. I just upgraded to the latest: % gcc42 -v Using built-in specs.
