Also:
* Flashing lights. Much easier to diagnose modem problems when you can
see the flashing lights flash when you type "AT" (or not, as the case
may be).
* Separate power supply. If the modem wedges completely you can reset
it without powering off the computer.
* Easy to upgrade. You don't have to mess around opening the case to
replace it.
Death to internal modems!
