It scans and goes up just fine, and wpa_supplicant exits without error...I suppose I should have run wpa_cli and gotten a little more than "exits without error" :). I ruled out panics specific to a DHCP packet by running the interface static. This time at least I saw a backtrace. I'll keep looking at it. If anyone hasn't seen it before, I found "meld" in ports which is pretty nice for doing line by line comparisons where things are mostly similar, reminds me of the visual patch tool in Xcode.
