Why does this occur in FreeBSD 12.2 and not in the 12.1 release?

I first started periodic daily
Then I started top to see what happened
Lsof took a lot of memory after which it crashed and clamd stopped working.
/var/log/messages contained a lot of messages

Define "stops working", does it crash, exit, or simply stop responding?
