Its a bug in 5.0 that only bites SMP kernels (GENERIC is SMP on
alpha).  This was just fixed Sat. in -currrent.  See the freebsd-alpha
archives for the patch.  Or rebuild a kernel without 'options SMP', or
upgrade to -current.
