We had the same problem after occasional switching to 5.0 from 4.0.
Userland symptoms' view was quite similar to reported in my kern/10226 PR
(which was variant of kern/8416) - root vnode locking.
We had to separate buildworld process to successive phases.
AlphaPC 164SX 533MHz, 128MB RAM, NCR 875.
