All too true, but maybe not the way you think.  The boot disk is one of
about 60, and if you pick the wrong one, then the install will fail.  Of
course, if you don't have SCSI or a network card, just about any of the
boot disks will work.

Also, as of 3.0.3, the two root disks were still needed for ftp
installs, at least.
