I got precisely this for cd /usr/ports/archivers/gtar make configure (it checked for rename()). This panic case was submitted as PR kern/150796 back on 21 Sep 2010 (on "Wed Sep 22 12:24:16 UTC 2010" "Assign to maintainer(s)"). No response so far. I WISH I could fix it myself but...
