I've built a small FreeBSD-based firewall/NAT box which runs fairly
comfortably from an 8MB compact flash card. Two techniques which
gain back a bunch of space are:

- gzip the kernel, since /boot/loader can uncompress it as it loads. Big
win here.

- build all of the programs which are usually staticly link to use
shared libraries instead. This gains back a bunch of space as well. Since
everything lives in a single partition, it's not like the dynamic
linker isn't going to be there.
