PATA WDC 800 drive. All very standard stuff for a desktop. Was running WinXP without a problem for quite some time. Generic kernel. In fact when I tried to install 5.4 (and 5.4-SNAP from 5 July & 9 July), it errored out as soon as the install kernel tried to write to the disk. FS's do not work when you can't write the superblocks out... Oh yeah, writing the disklabel also generated the same error. So it's not just the SATA raid type chipsets. It's plain vanilla ATA controllers, also. John ---------------------------------------------------------------------- John T.
