This appears to be the final word for the time being wrt the Yamaha DS-XG series of sound chips: http://kt.linuxcare.com/kt19991220_47.html#1, see article 4. So, by the time 4.0 is stable enough, maybe the Linux crowd will get Yamaha to be a little more forthcoming on their documentation.
