If you've just upgraded from an old version (which this kind of
implies), you will need to run mergemaster. If the operation of
this machine is critical, back up /etc (which you should have
with your pre-upgrade backup, right? :), and man mergemaster, as
you can bugger your sytem fairly easily.  Also read
/usr/src/UPDATING, if it's there for you.  Off-topic response I'm
sure.
