Before the GUI version of Windows, there was a character-based version:

- the first version with tiled "windows", it was released circa 1982 or
1983 (my memory is hazy).  I was at the Plaza Hotel in NYC for the
official announcement.

- the next version of character-based windows had cascading and
overlapping windows.  That was circa 1983-84.

I had been using Windows since then.
