Answer: Yes.

I have a hot-swap case and can swap my internal SATA disks.  Your 
eSATA's show up as 'ad' devices, correct?  You may need to run 
atacontrol to get the drives to show up after you hot-plug them.

 atacontrol list
*find the channel*
 atacontrol attach ata3  (or whatever number...)

"man atacontrol" for lots of useful info.
