Forgive my ignorance, but I do not have a copy of ISO 9899 or K&R II lying around, nor do I know off the top of my head what gcc or any other tools adher to with or without flags specified. And certainly do I not want to be bothered with standards compliance when trying to understand a piece of code. int *ptr = NULL; instead of int *ptr; for a variable with static lifetime is considered by most people a Good Thing.
