Still no luck.  However, if I reduce the record rate to 8 bits instead of
16, the sound comes out a little more clearer.  This uses the recording
program supplied with the Gnome.  I think it's called "grecord".  But
there's still too much static and squeeking.

I guess I'm confused about the recording rate.  There's a sample rate,
which is set to 48000 I believe.  "grecord" lets you set this, as well as
another parameter with values 8 or 16 (bit is the unit).
