It was solved for my system (GeForce GT 440 with FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE and nvidia-driver-375.26_1) with the following line added to /boot/loader.conf hw.vga.textmode=3D1 This will cause vt to use the text mode instead of the graphics mode.
