Oracle ended official releases of JDK 7 in April of 2015, and JDK 6 even
earlier. In the FreeBSD ports collection both java/openjdk6 and
java/openjdk7 have fallen out of maintenance and are considerably behind
in terms of updates (which likely include fixes for security
vulnerabilities). In addition, openjdk6 will soon become unbuildable in
FreeBSD 12-STABLE based on

https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=234792

With OpenJDK 8 having been the default JDK for a number of years now,
OpenJDK 11 and 12 both being available (and soon 13) I would suggest
that both openjdk6 and openjdk7 be removed, along with any ports
depending explicitly on them(*) which are unable to be updated to use a
newer version.

However, I wanted to get an idea of how many people are explicitly using
either openjdk6 or openjdk7 and can't update to at least openjdk8. If so,
what is limiting you and are you prepared to work on updating the ports
to the latest version?

My effort at the moment is focused entirely on openjdk8 and higher, and
openjdk11 in particular. I feel it would be counter-productive to spend
time on openjdk6 and openjdk7 other than to remove them. I'm open to
committing patches if people are willing to take over maintenance on them
though.

* - The ports which appear to allow only openjdk6 or openjdk7 are:

math/jakarta-commons-math (either)
java/jakarta-commons-dbcp (6)
devel/storm (7)
devel/py-pydoop (7)

All of these appear to have newer versions that support at least Java 8.
