Doesn't FreeBSD come with shadow passwords?

No this is the Secure Shell package.

packages and ports are different. The packages should have a .tar.gz or
.tgz file available. The ports package requires you go the the directory
immediately above the port you want get the whole directory and dump it
into /usr/ports (??? may be wrong off the top of my head).

Then do a make (again havn't done a port in a while)
It's all in the FreeBSD handbook.
