Subject: getting vmemoryuse resource limit

I have recently upgraded a 4.6-release system using binary snapshots from
snapshots.jp.freebsd.org. Since then, I've been getting error messages
similar to the following:

Sun Jul 7 22:20:30 MST 2002
Jul 7 22:20:30 hostname init: getting vmemoryuse resource limit: Invalid
argument

init is not the only program that does this however. I get the same messages
from cron and su. I don't even understand why cron is running in the first
place since there is nothing in crontab, but that is a seperate issue. What
does this error message mean and could it be related to signal 4's and
internal compiler errors that i get when building world or kernel?

I appreciate any help that may be offered.
