I'm not sure if this is relevant to the problem but I noted that a
number of libs on my laptop reference libutil.so.8 which has been
subsequently replaced by libutil.so.9.

I am currently in the process of rebuilding the 76 ports that need it -
including virtualbox. I'll report back if it has any impact,
