Thanks!  You know I could have swore I tried that :-(  I think I got 
fixated on the man page which states

FILES
      /dev/ad*                 ATA disk device nodes
      /dev/acd*                ATAPI CD-ROM device nodes
      /dev/afd*                ATAPI floppy drive device nodes
      /dev/ast*                ATAPI tape drive device nodes

Perhaps an update to the manpage to clarify ?

      /dev/ast*                ATAPI tape drive device nodes
      /dev/rast*               ATAPI tape drive device nodes
