As far as I know this feature (shell) does not work, it probably is
for future feature implementation. I simply go to a different virtual
terminal to do my choice of action. I'm sure I seen this in the
archives somewhere.

The "net:" allows you to `dial net' at the PPP ON > prompt to initiate
dial. See Re:[FWD]FreeBSD 2.1.5 and Dial-Up PPP 

This allows you the option of more than one provider in your
ppp.conf.
