Actually I made some headway with building alpha tools on i386 current by
tweaking the bfd.h which came out of configure.  When I get back from my
trip, I will have another look at it.

While you are in this area, how about importing binutils 2.9.x?  It fixes
a bunch of ELF linking problems for i386 at least and probably others.
