Diets low in certain nutrients reduce resistance to oral and dental inf=
ections, that is, periodontal disease (gum disease) and decay=2E A heal=
thy immune system is essential to controlling periodontal disease=2E

Counseling in the Four Basic Food groups will improve dental health and=
 general health=2E The consumption of sugar, especially in sticky forms=
 or in a baby bottle while sleeping, contributes to the rapid developme=
nt of dental decay=2E

The trace nutrient fluoride, may not be adequately supplied by bottle o=
r municipal water supplies=2E Supplementation with oral tablets and top=
ical application will reduce the incidence of dental decay by more than=
 60%=2E

Together, a balanced diet, daily use of fluoride, effective brushing, a=
nd sensible eating habits can reduce the risk of, or even prevent, infe=
ctious dental disease=2E
