Have you tried defragging the disk ?

Although it is payware, I do recommend partition magic for this kind
of thing, it seems to deal a lot better.

the true geometry of the disk is often not what the BIOS is using ...
but 1.5Gb into a disk should be ok on all but a very old machine.
