I really hate to harp on this, but i've heard people talking about closing the 3.x tree because 4.0 is so great. Well, i hate to say it, but i'm stuck in 3.4 because my zip drive will not work with 4.0. This is not ijust a bug, but may be a sign of a more serious problem deep in the newbus code that may come back to haunt us in an unforeseen manner in the future. I hope this is considered an important issue, because there are a lot of laptop users that rely on parallel port zip drives for general storage and backups. Parallel port zips (especially the 250 meg version like mine) are not old technology, and they need to work under 4.0. So, before we consider closing 3.x, it would make sense to make sure all of these outstanding issues are resolved. I realize that zip drives for laptops may pale in importance next to network features and NFS improvements, and i certainly don't want to get in the way of progress. But zip drives are current technology that needs to be supported for years to come. Especially if we still want to be considered cutting edge. If there were *any* way for me to fix this myself, i would be glad to. If i can *help* in any way, i would be glad to. As it stands, as much as i hate the thought, i have to spend an hour or two this week reinstalling 3.4 and reassembling my system from scratch because my zip drive is important to getting my work done. And that is a truly sad reason to have to roll back such an awesome release of a fantastic OS. jm -- -------------------------------------------- Jonathon McKitrick -- jcm@freebsd-uk.eu.org The spice must flow.... -------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message
