Hi all, I'm configuring a RAID-5 filesystem on a Pentium III 1Ghz machine (FreeBSD 4.9-PRERELEASE). The disks are "dangerously dedidcated." I created the filesystem using this: hostname# vinum create -v -f /etc/vinum.conf 1: drive d1 device /dev/ad2s1e 2: drive d2 device /dev/ad4s1e 3: drive d3 device /dev/ad6s1e 4: drive d4 device /dev/ad8s1e 5: drive d5 device /dev/ad10s1e 6: volume raid5 7: plex org raid5 512k 8: sd length 78167m drive d1 9: sd length 78167m drive d2 10: sd length 78167m drive d3 11: sd length 78167m drive d4 12: sd length 78167m drive d5 5 drives: Drive d1: Device /dev/ad2s1e Created on hostname.dagupan.com at Thu Aug 28 11:38:56 2003 Config last updated Thu Aug 28 11:38:56 2003 Size: 81964302336 bytes (78167 MB) Used: 81964175872 bytes (78167 MB) Available: 126464 bytes (0 MB) State: up Last error: none Active requests: 0 Maximum active: 0 Drive d2: Device /dev/ad4s1e Created on hostname.dagupan.com at Thu Aug 28 11:38:56 2003 Config last updated Thu Aug 28 11:38:56 2003 Size: 81964302336 bytes (78167 MB) Used: 81964175872 bytes (78167 MB) Available: 126464 bytes (0 MB) State: up Last error: none Active requests: 0 Maximum active: 0 Drive d3: Device /dev/ad6s1e Created on hostname.dagupan.com at Thu Aug 28 11:38:56 2003 Config last updated Thu Aug 28 11:38:56 2003 Size: 81964302336 bytes (78167 MB) Used: 81964175872 bytes (78167 MB) Available: 126464 bytes (0 MB) State: up Last error: none Active requests: 0 Maximum active: 0 Drive d4: Device /dev/ad8s1e Created on hostname.dagupan.com at Thu Aug 28 11:38:56 2003 Config last updated Thu Aug 28 11:38:56 2003 Size: 81964302336 bytes (78167 MB) Used: 81964175872 bytes (78167 MB) Available: 126464 bytes (0 MB) State: up Last error: none Active requests: 0 Maximum active: 0 Drive d5: Device /dev/ad10s1e Created on hostname.dagupan.com at Thu Jun 12 19:37:43 2003 Config last updated Thu Aug 28 11:38:56 2003 Size: 81964302336 bytes (78167 MB) Used: 81964175872 bytes (78167 MB) Available: 126464 bytes (0 MB) State: up Last error: none Active requests: 0 Maximum active: 0 1 volumes: Volume raid5: Size: 327856160768 bytes (312668 MB) State: down Flags: 1 plexes Read policy: round robin 1 plexes: Plex raid5.p0: Size: 327856160768 bytes (312668 MB) Subdisks: 5 State: init Organization: raid5 Stripe size: 512 kB Part of volume raid5 5 subdisks: Subdisk raid5.p0.s0: Size: 81964040192 bytes (78167 MB) State: empty Plex raid5.p0 at offset 0 (0 B) Drive d1 (/dev/ad2s1e) at offset 135680 (132 kB) Subdisk raid5.p0.s1: Size: 81964040192 bytes (78167 MB) State: empty Plex raid5.p0 at offset 524288 (512 kB) Drive d2 (/dev/ad4s1e) at offset 135680 (132 kB) Subdisk raid5.p0.s2: Size: 81964040192 bytes (78167 MB) State: empty Plex raid5.p0 at offset 1048576 (1024 kB) Drive d3 (/dev/ad6s1e) at offset 135680 (132 kB) Subdisk raid5.p0.s3: Size: 81964040192 bytes (78167 MB) State: empty Plex raid5.p0 at offset 1572864 (1536 kB) Drive d4 (/dev/ad8s1e) at offset 135680 (132 kB) Subdisk raid5.p0.s4: Size: 81964040192 bytes (78167 MB) State: empty Plex raid5.p0 at offset 2097152 (2048 kB) Drive d5 (/dev/ad10s1e) at offset 135680 (132 kB) Inspecting the output of the create command, I noticed that the reported available space on each drive is 0 MB!
