You must be really tight.  I've been running 4-STABLE on a 386 with 8M
memory, although I'm now using a 486 as my normal bottom-of-line
machine.  I did have problems moving from 3-S to 4-S with one of my
ethernet cards, but I now have that as a spare for my WfW box.

I don't know how much longer they'll support 3-STABLE, but I wouldn't
expect too many ports to build any more.
