I can't really comment on that. I would have to be fully knowledgable about the Makefile. There are a couple of current threads on 4.x where people are trying to turn it off in some of the builds and are failing. My personal approach is that if I turn something off and the buld fails, it must either be required or I need a lot more knowledge about the process than I have. I usually face the choice by shrugging my shoulders and assuming it must be required. The time required to learn about the process is a lot more involved than turning the option off :).
